DCvdL - Commissioned Works

This painting set was commissioned with the request of a painting with colors matching other accessories in the living room. In the picture you see the pillows and blanket to which they are matched.

The accessoires have softer and lighter pastel colors than I would normally use for my own concept paintings. Since the pillows resemble japanese woodblock print type flowers I decided to paint Ukiyo-e woodblock print type geishas. To make it more distinct I painted exaggerated features of how characters in Ukiyo-e style are depicted, with smaller, more tilted eyes, smaller lips and a longer face and nose.

This portrait was commissioned with the request of a larger painting of a black and white photo.

Throughout painting such paintings, I constantly make small corrections in the shape of eyes and other facial features, even late in the painting process. I think this is important to capture the likeness accurately. I believe people who know the person depicted would notice small deviations of details even where others would not.

For this commission I was asked to paint something in my own with the only condition being 'Depict someone in a kitchen working on/cutting something'.

This gave me a lot of artistic freedom which I liked but which also made it slightly harder to think of the composition.
I started with a lot of different sketches but as you can see the final composition has a strong focus on hands and faces, which are my favorite features to paint.

Here my mom wanted red dangling earring which were suprising hard to find with the desired shape and dangliness.
I made these by carving basswood in the shape and which i connected to the chain with a hook eye screw.

After seeing these earrings my sister also wanted earrings but didnt decide on a shape only on a golden color. I decided to carve classical drop-shaped earrings.
